May bug

Found this May bug beetle inside my welly today! I always give my shoes an upside-down shake before putting them on, a good habit from my Philippine childhood where I spent my early years on a sugarcane plantation near a rain forest. Poisonous and usually very large spiders often lurked in footwear and clothing, so getting dressed could be quite an adventure.

We're seeing quite a number of these May bugs this year which hasn't been the case in previous years. It's probably a result of decreased pesticide use in our local agriculture. It was released unhurt.
