John o Groats

Back in January we set ourself a challenge. By Easter we were to cycle from Burray to Burwick on the south end of South Ronaldsay and back - 36km in total. At the time it seemed like a challenge. Probably not a challenge for most cyclists but it certainly was for K and I who normally spend the first 15minutes of our ride discussing what ailments we have developed this week... dodgy hips, creaking knees, stiff shoulders, deafness, gout, the black death....

Today, it still felt like a challenge!

Weather not great but not rubbish either. A head wind on the way south which we consoled ourselves with would be at our back on the way home. And some pretty big humps to climb over.

We made it to the far point South. In the pic you can see Scotland. Over there in the greyness is John O Groats, the holy grail of all those that set out from Land's End. We never took the boat over today, just ate some chocolate and turned to head north again.

Of course the wind at this point turned to face us and the rain decided to tag along but we kept those legs turning and made it in fairly good nick back to the Cafe at the Fossil Centre where we were rewarded with giant bowls of soup followed by sticky toffee pudding to die for.

Then we sat there for an hour as we couldn't straighten our legs to get out of our chairs.
