Students

This picture shows some of the lovely student nurses at the hospital I am placed in. Today we had a session on safe disposal of healthcare waste(not the most fascinating topic!) and yet again I was so impressed by the dedication of these young people. They are so keen to learn. If you ask them what they would like to learn they say "please tell us everything you know"To be a student nurse here is tough. The training is expensive and students are often a long way from home and living in dreadful conditions. This hospital, thanks to an inspirational director, has a wonderful new accommodation block for student nurses. There are still 4 to a room The class room in the picture is also new .The nurses work very long hours in busy, overcrowded ,understaffed wards with very few resources. There are no text books. There are no facilities for power point(thank goodness those of us who have sat through endless powerpoint presentations may say) and handouts are always shared between 4 or 5 nurses. Yet they hang on your every word which must be difficult and tiring as I teach in English which is then translated by 1 of the wonderful assistants we work with. When I first started working like this I was well out of my comfort zone but getting to know these students and realising how much they value the input made me put my own anxieties into perspective very quickly and now I treasure the experience
