The Edge of the Wold

Sea and sunlight

I must have been tired before this holiday because I struggled to get up to see the sunrise, even though it is at a much more civilised time than at home in Cumbria now. I was rewarded for my effort this morning though, as the sun broke through the cloud low on the horizon.

The little stone building is an old pumphouse. The apparently two-legged structure on top is actually four legged and made of wood. It represents the remains of an old windpump that drew sea water up into pans where it was evaporated to make salt. A few such buildings and structures have been preserved amongst the modern coastal development.
