Islands in the cloud

There was a blanket of cloud over the east coast this morning. The obvious thing to do was to drive up through and beyond the cloud to the highest point (2426 metres). Alas, yes, you can drive all the way.

This was the mother of all cloud inversions. At times the cloud obscured everything as far as the eye could see, but for just three peaks of volcanic rock projecting like nunataks from an ice cap. When this was taken, the cloud had retreated a little.
