Rab and his friends Is a book writen about one of my distant relations on
my mother side.
The story is about a man who works from penicuik[pennycook] a village
about seven mills out side edinburgh.He had a carrier buisnes in 1850
that was taking a horse and cart round farms collecting anything that was to
be taken into the city.Then he would bring anything thy wanted brought back.Rab is the name of his dog that at the end of the story wont let the owner
in to feed the horse so ends up shooting it.The trueth is It died of old age.
The man had a wife and family and a cottage in a village in leadburn.
The book was famous in its time the names were changed as the people were still alive at the time.It was my sister who discoverd this looking through the family history.There is also a mention of it on the wall in the penicuik cemetry.
penicuik like alot of villages had big paper mills it also until a few years ago
