Aberdeenshire Canal, Dalwearie
The old Great North of Scotland Railway line (still in use) between Aberdeen and Inverurie is built mostly on the filled-in bed of a former canal.
No - that's not an April Fool joke - it's quite true.
Except, as that article states, "The idea was to use the old canal bed, but where the canal followed the contours of the land too rigidly, the railway was able to take a straighter line. It is where the two diverged that today we can explore the remains of the old canal."
And one of the main points where these remains survive is where we are today - at Dalwearie, on the Aberdeen side of Kintore.
