Krakow Main Square

Near the end of this afternoon I returned to Krakow's main square, just in time to catch the last rays of sun on St. Mary's Basilica before clouds closed in.

The Gothic basilica is of brick--as are many of Krakow's churches; the current church was rebuilt in the 14th century. Aside from its lavishly decorated interior, its major feature is a spectacular sculptured altarpiece by the German artist Veit Stoss. It is the largest Gothic altarpiece anywhere.

Visible on the right is a very small part of the Clothmaker's Hall (or Draper's Hall), which extends across much of the middle of the square. On the left are a number of horse-drawn carriages, waiting for customers.

We've greatly enjoyed our visit to Krakow, and fly back to Paris early tomorrow.
