Baroque in Krakow

This shows a portion of the church of Saints Peter and Paul--just a minuscule fragment of Krakow's architectural marvels.

The church is a wonderful baroque structure, modeled on Giacomo della Porta's Church of the Gesù in Rome. It was built over about 30 years starting in 1597. The blip includes four of the dozen statues of the apostles, in front of the church; they date from 1722.

Krakow was undamaged by 20th century wars and it is full of wonderful architectural and cultural edifices--above all churches (well over 100). The other outstanding church on our walk today was Notre Dame (also known as St. Mary's Basilica), dating from the 14th century, with a dazzlingly colorful interior. Its enormous altarpiece is by the German sculptor Veit Stoss, with a multitude of biblical scenes and figures. (For me, it rivals the Majestà by Duccio in Siena.)
