Bernadette's Vision

Forgotten Times

Went to the lake just after sunrise, got there a little too late to catch anything good, the sun was too bright and I was too cold @ 28 degrees F. Must be the Daylight Savings adjustment that had me all excited to get out and take shots.

This train car sits at the entrance to the lake's Windsurf beach. This area used to be a thriving town. Long ago flour was the main crop grown until the big drought and dust bowl times. Then the farmers went to raising turkeys. Not long after that failure the town disappeared. Navajo Lake is man made. It now takes up what used to be called Rosa, a bustling town with a railway and even a "red light" district. The town was sunk under the lake. Every now and then a casket floats up from the old remains of the cemetery.

The railroad is gone except for remnants of tracks through farms and an occasional rail car like this. Everything moved to Durango and this area is long forgotten except for its recreational use as a lake.

PS- Thanks for your comments yesterday. The water we haul is Town Drinking water that is Reverse Osmosmis treated. A lot of people here in the country have to supplement their well water with it and haul weekly. We keep a big tank full, just in case. If electricity goes out, pumps don't work to get the water to homes.
