Agnes Meek Shall (not) Inherit the Earth
Old Calton Cemetery, Edinburgh. I took a walk over Calton Hill today after getting an earlier-than-usual bus. It was a glorious morning with views along the Forth and a great way to start the day. I wandered into the graveyard on a whim and was struck by the continuation of rank and stature (literally in the case of Abe) after death. Are these people never satisfied? Apparently not.
Here's Abraham Lincoln on the American Civil War Memorial, "In Memory of Scottish-American Soldiers". Beneath him an awe-struck freed slave. Beside him the tomb of David Hume, an Establishment know-all from the Scottish Enlightenment. In the foreground is the rather less grand grave of Agnes Meek who we sadly don't know very much about at all. Weather and time have seen to that, and the goode olde internette knows nothing either. She must have been someone though, because this is a graveyard for those who were definitely someone. Or at least had a load of cash, as evidenced by the large graves of goldsmiths and such like.
Anyway, they're dead and we're not. Long may that situation continue.
P.S. Yes, I know these are genuinely great people. And Aggie may have been a right cow, I have no idea. I'm just in a wedding-anniversary-induced bad mood and having a go at dead people is a pretty easy way to vent. But, in the morning I'll be chirpy and they'll still be dead. So that's alright.
Having a bit of a Bill Hicks phase this evening. "Hmm-K? Hmm-K. I am available for children's parties."
