I was brought up in Wyke Regis, midway between Weymouth/Melcombe Regis and Portland. By secondary school age I was living in Upwey with my parents and brother and was taking the bus to Dorchester each day. I did not do well academically and left school at age 15 to be an apprentice compositor at a Dorchester printing company. The work was tough at first but I found the journeymen (yes, they were all men who had completed an apprenticeship of six years) kind and in the main willing to pass on their knowledge. I had 'day release' each week to attend Bournemouth School of Art which entailing being given money to pay for the train fare and lunch. I found that the design aspect stimulating and got 'City and Guilds' distinctions in 'Compositors Work'
