Between Direct and Escape

Very foggy morning. Little could be seen any distance ahead. When the man between Direct TV and the Ford Escape got to the other side of the crosswalk just under the interstate overpass, he turned to the traffic and displayed a cardboard placard on which was scrawled "Veteran. Hungry - Can you help?" Everything just before had been foreshadowing for the sad punchline. A direct handout would only be a short-sighted reprieve. He had little chance to escape the cloud that shadows many of us veterans in some form and degree.
