Church in the City
This is St Alban church and sits in the middle of Wood Street, just 5 minutes from the Bank of England. I pass it every day on my way through The City to work in Farringdon. I just found this bit of history on the web:
"The name Wood Street was derived from the many wood merchants that worked on this site in medieval times. Wood Street was popular with drapers, haberdashers and milliners from the mid 19th century well into the 20th century. The headquarters of the City of London Police, which is located at 37 Wood Street EC2, house a small museum outlining the history of policing within the City of London. The churches of St Alban, which has a Grade 1 listed tower still standing today, St Michael and St Peter West Cheap were all once located on Wood Street."
I love the fact that the old church which is just the tower really has been allowed to remain amongst all the corporate buildings that surround. A friend told me that someone lives here, but I'm not sure.
