Lark Rise (Emma Timmins Not Pictured)
One of my guilty pleasures was the TV series Lark Rise To Candleford, a sentimental, romanticized and light-hearted look at life in two Oxfordshire communities in the late nineteenth century, adapted from the novels of Flora Thompson. Its cast included Mark Heap as Thomas Brown, the Candleford postman, and Julia Sawalha as the lovely Post Mistress Dorcas Lane. It lasted for four series but now that it has finished its run, the locations have become known.
Lark Rise, where the Timmins family lived, was at Hatt Farm, a B&B near Box, shown here today - sadly without any of the cast.
The neighbouring village of Candleford was recreated on a set behind the scenes on the Neston Park estate near Atworth, in Wiltshire. There is a Neston Park Farm Shop there, which I visited last year, little knowing how close I was to Candleford (though I had speculated where it might be as I knew it was in the Corsham area).
