A cone collection

We suddenly noticed a huge pile of pine cones put underneath one of the hawthorn trees. Is there some animal that does this kind of thing? I could only think of squirrels but they visit our garden only rarely. The other animals we have are birds, badgers, moles, deer. So far it's a mystery!
