Frederick W. ELWELL 1870-1958
Painter of genre, portraits, landscapes and still life. Born 29 June 1870 in Beverley, Yorkshire, son of James Elwell, wood carver and Mayor of Beverley. Studied art in Lincoln, won the Gibney Scholarship 1887 and went to the Academy Schools, Antwerp, for four years. Worked in London and Beverley, then resumed his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris. Exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1894 and the R.A. from 1895. Returned to Beverley c. 1903 and married in 1914 his pupil Mary Dawson Bishop (1874-1952), painter of landscapes and interiors.
