Kiwi!

This is a real live Kiwi. You can see him there in the middle, with three toes and a beak!

Since they are nocturnal, you can only see them in some purpose built enclosures that simulate darkness during the daytime.

Kiwi cannot see red light so the enclosures use only weak red bulbs.

Photography is not normally permitted (especially as flashes going off are extremelt distressing to the birds) but I had special permission to shoot this and no flash was used - only the red ambient light.

It was VERY hard as the camera would not focus well at all in such conditions so it was a bit hit and miss. Of course the ISO was cranked up too so it is a bit noisy, but hey - sometimes you just have to live with that to get the shot.
