Sixth Street Bridge - Bridge #4

Constructed in 1886, the bridge was slated for demolition in 1975 but was spared when citizens vociferously objected. So instead the bridge was restored. It's now listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is Michigan's longest Pratt truss bridge, and one of the oldest metal bridges.

The wrought iron bridge spans the Grand River, just north of downtown Grand Rapids, and is 535 feet long and 20 feet wide. It carries two-way vehicular traffic but I avoid using it. Twenty feet may sound wide but when cars are crossing at the same time in different directions, it doesn't feel very wide.

I started this series as Railroad Bridges but am expanding it to include other bridges as well. Too bad we can't edit old titles and too bad I didn't think further ahead. Ah well.

Bridge #3, and previous.

Yesterday's Sunday Movie Marathon went on into the night so I was not able to make many comments. I will catch up soon, and in the meantime, these movies are highly recommended:

The Assassination of Jesse James By That Coward Robert Ford
Let the Right One In
The Lives of Others
There Will Be Blood
