House of the future; or just eccentric?

On the roof of our house you can see photovoltaic cells. When the photograph was taken today it was overcast and they are only producing electricity at a rate of 10p tariff payment per hour. On sunny days in the summer they were producing £1.20 per hour. Payment doesn't depend on whether the house is consuming the electricity or not - the tariff is paid anyway.
