Through the trees
Saturday
A most interesting morning at church for Coffee and Conversation. Our speaker this month was Mark Godsey, a professor at the Law School at the University of Cincinnati and co-founder and director of the Ohio Innocence Project, whose aim is to identify inmates in Ohio prisons who are innocent of the crimes they were convicted of committing. The project harnesses the energy and intellect of law students, providing them with valuable experience at the same time. Innocence is often determined by DNA testing, but can include other types of new evidence such as new witnesses, new expert testimony, or evidence of police misconduct. It can often be a long frustrating procedure. Once a prisoner's innocence has been established through investigation, the OIP sends the case back to court and litigates in the hope of obtaining the inmate's freedom. Innocence Projects across the country have freed more than 250 wrongfully convicted inmates to date, a number having served over twenty years of their sentence, and also several who were on Death Row at the time of their exhoneration.
This afternoon we went walking round the lake at Sharon Woods - the path through the gorge was still taped off. This evening we drove up to Miami University and took Laura out for some Indian food, before attending the Choir Concert, which featured each of the four choirs, as well as the Cincinnati May Festival Youth Chorus. Laura sings with the Choraliers, the womens chorus.
