AHT or PSV?
This morning, the Indian supply vessel Manak-I came alongside our vessel in order to take over some equipment and a turbo blower engineer. Every seaman in the whole world has a very sharp eye for other vessels details and shortcomings. In our industry you have installation vessels like the Hermod and support vessels like tugs, supply vessels, anchor handling vessels and so on. When watching the Manak-I approaching us with her stern first, I realized that this vessel is built as an AHT, which stands for Anchor Handling Tug, and has anchor handling capabilities, but is used as PSV, which is Platform Supply Vessel. The fendering on her stern shows her real identity, if she was a heavy duty anchor handler, the fendering would not survive one minute on that particular spot. Chains and anchors would have no mercy with these nice fendering. PSV's without anchor handling winches or equipment on board are also called 'straight suppliers' and as far as I am concerned, the Manak-I belongs to that category.
