Wellesley Memories

Today in my dorm, the Wellesley Alumnae Association hosted an event called Wellesley Memories. Basically, they brought back a Wellesley graduate from each decade since the 1940's and they talked about how the college used to be. It was absolutely fantastic. Chatting with Wellesley alum is always great, but with this panel, we all got to see how Wellesley has evolved over the years. The women used to have curfew and class on Saturday, dress code and formal dinners. Things have definitely come a long way but it was interesting to learn about the traditions that have held strong, like step singing and hoop rolling in the spring. While waiting for the panel to start, I caught sight of this lonely old man, looking like he was already ready for bed. Later found out he's the husband of the 1940's alum :)

Most memorable quotes of the night:
-By the 1970's alum as part of her response to why she chose Wellesley. "My father said, 'You cannot apply to Radcliffe. The women there are weird. And ugly.'"
-By the 1990's alum in speaking about seeing the student who hosted her when she was a prospective student later in life. "I saw her and was like, 'Oh my god, you changed my life!' And she was like, 'Who are you?'"
-By the 1980's alum about what Wellesley women were like in the 80's. "And then we boycotted orange juice..it was our way of acting out."
