Cup of Sugar

One cup of sugar in the house,
One cup of sugar...I say.
Sugar was rationed then,
And war was on its way.

At the time I was a young girl,
My mother was no where nigh.
I took that cup of sugar,
And made a custard pie.

Fore-thought...I didn't have,
The present was all I could see.
We had to go without sugar,
A month or more...to be.

It was only the present that mattered,
And the pleasure of today that I got.
I didn't think of tomorrow,
T'was the taste of the pie that I sought.

It was a good lesson...to me,
A cup of sugar...I say.
If you have no promise tomorrow,
Don't eat it all up today.
