This is the underground part of Gwangju's May 18 Memorial Park. The park honours those who were killed during the Gwangju massacre of May 18th 1980.
The killings were the result of attempts by the citizens of Gwangju to rise up against dictator Chun Doo Hwan. They took to arms and defended the city, taking full control for several days - but were ultimately slaughtered by Doo Hwan's military.
The horrors that occured are just another chapter in the incredible modern history of the Korean peninsula.
