MV Tuhoe

A 97 foot, double-masted auxiliary schooner, built in Auckland, NZ in 1919 by George Nicol for the Northern Steamship Company and launched on April 7.
The ship was originally fitted with two 60-horsepower engines from Glasgow that had been salvaged from the ship, Eunice. The Tuhoe's maiden voyage took place on May 1 1919, from Auckland to Whakatane and carried on to Tauranga.

It is named after the Maori tribe, Tuhoe, 'the children of the mist'.

Today the Tuhoe has been restored and lives on the Kaiapoi River. It now chugs leisurely down the river as a top attraction on Sundays.

I feel as though some of my heritage is here with the Tuhoe. Its maiden voyage was to my home town of Whakatane. Mum remembers it well chugging over the bar loaded with cargo many a time. It did have some mishaps - it ran aground several times and ran into Whale Island in 1950.

Mum and I had a great day at the river. I took so many photos as it was calm on the water and the sky blue. It was hard to choose and hubby was of no help - he didn't like any of them, but when pushed he chose three and this was one of them.

We all see things differently which makes the arts so interesting.

Hope you like this one - a little different but part of my heritage, we are now living in the same area, how cool is that!!  But of course the MV Tuhoe is alot older :)
