Robin the third

Busy day today - reading, reading, reading. Midway through the morning, up popped the robin; well two robins to be precise. This bold robin, and his/her rather more shy companion, who skulked in the hedge and didn't come out. Perhaps a bird expert could enlighten me - is this common? Is this what robins do? Is the male bold and the female shy, or vice versa. Or none of the above?
