Gies a tap

The Cask & Barrel has the best pint you can get for £2. It is Borders Cowie - a lovely pale ale. The tap didn't have a sign on it before recently. Papa used to brew a lot and made this "Broughton Street Domestic Ale" tap fount sign for one of his brews back in the day.

Mitch, the bar manager in the Cask, checked with the wee brewer that produces the Cowie and they agreed that Papa's old sign would be appropriate since he keeps them right with their beers in there.

The design of the sign was Papa's too. It shows the view up Broughton Street from the Mansfield Church/London Street/Bellevue/Broughton Street roundabout (the black circle in the design). It also shows its age cos at the top you can see Calton Hill. Now, of course, this view is blocked by the beautiful architecture of the St. James Centre.

Papa was saying that for rural, off-the-beaten-track pubs (like the Drumbeg Hotel) to have such a real guest ale, they'd have to shift 9 gallons a week to make it worthwhile. Then he said:
"Of course, any self-respecting landlord should be able to drink that in a week himself. Nae bother."
