Civic Heart

This is a sculpture called the 'Civic Heart' by Artist Jo Fairfax. Chester-le-Street District Council selected Jo Fairfax to plan and design a new Civic Heart that would encourage community use whilst helping to reinforce feelings of pride, identity and distinctiveness.

The shape of the Civic Heart was inspired by the nearby railway viaduct and the use of red brick is a subtle acknowledgment to Chester-le-Street's Roman heritage. The archway was designed to act as a stage and central focal point for future events to take place. It was completed in 2007.
