Robinson Crusoe
On the way to work today went through Largo which was the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk who spent four years solitude on a tropical island and was the inspiration for the Daniel Defoe book Robinson Crusoe.
Alexander was from a wealthy family but ran away to sea at a young age. Effectively became a government pirate, got stranded on the island, then after he was rescued, took a ship and became the captain of the ship and returned to Britain a wealthy man. He went back to sea but died after drinking contaminated water.
This is a statue to commemorate his birthplace.
