Anvil

Formed by atmospheric instability causing an updraft through the clouds you can see
lower down in the photo.  The cloud spreads upwards until it reaches the tropopause
where it can't go any further and this produces the flattened top. They normally presage
thunderstorms and even tornadoes but this particular one was so unstable that by the 
time I had crested the next hill, hoping to get a better photo (about 5 minutes) it had 
completely vanished.
