History in the making
Finally- the Internet! In a hotel near the airport at JFK where we gratefully landed tonight Sunday..but I'm backblipping this for yesterday - not a great photo- thru the dirty bus window with the iPhone but it is certainly HISTORICAL! We made a nonstop bus ride from Alexandria to Cairo and drove thru the center of the city to our hotel near the airport. This is near the center square on the 6th of Oct bridge- the burning buildings are the national party headquarters- it's not clear who set it on fire. There is a burned truck there too. Saw lots of army tanks on the street- the police are gone- including the many antiquities police. The army repulsed some protesters from getting into the Egyptian museum, (the reddish dome on the top left corner) but alas I heard that today this did happen and some ancient mummies and other things are damaged. Even in our hotel in the nice suberb of Heliopolis, there were people with sticks out on the streets guarding their homes. The hotel was dark for the curfew - dinner in the dark. Gunfire was heard in the night.
We feel lucky as our scheduled flight out of Cairo is Sunday so I'll try to blip a pix of the airport for the 30th.
Our odyssey Egyptian guide was fantastic - plotting our routes and taking care- but he is delighted at the overthrow of the present government. What an education we have had!
