Big Society Revenue & Customs
Anti-cuts demos took place up and down the country today - you can find out why here.
The one I took part in London was entirely peaceful, unthreatening and above all a laugh - yet still the Met fucked it up.
We targeted Boots, who like a bunch of big companies are basically using tax loopholes to make themselves austerity-proof while the rest of us are left counting the cost of shit most of us had no part in causing.
The idea with all these protests is to block entry and exit to stores and force them to close. We dressed as doctors and nurses (the theme was save the NHS), sharing laughs with police and (some) staff as we sang 'We are the tax enforcement society' and other ditties on a tax-dodging tip.
After a while, we moved outside. Shoppers offered their support. A couple of bemused and amused council workers confided that they were being told whether they'd be losing their jobs next week. A fruit stall holder told me we were doing the right thing.
Then when one of the protesters tried to put a flyer through the closed door and was arrested by an overzealous officer on grounds of criminal damage to property. When friends objected, at least one police officer used CS spray on them. Three had to go to hospital.
Not for the first time, it was a case of completely disproportionate, unprovoked response from individual police officers.
It's going to be a long year. There'll be more of this.
Anyway, have to wrap this up. Have to do my own tax declaration now...
'If you don't pay your tax, we'll shut you down'
It's Sub Sunday
