Patiently Waiting

Why is it that dogs left to wait for their owners always look so sad and abandoned. I have to control myself from going up to them, giving a big hug, saying 'it's all right, they will come back', and then staying with them until they do. But I don't, instead I take a picture and then say, nice doggy and blow them a kiss.
