The Hollywood Theater
This theater was opened 1935 on Johnson Street in the Audubon neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis. Built in the "Zigzag" Art Deco style, now it has seen better days. The theater has been designated as architecturally significant by the City of Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Committee as well as the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office. The theater is currently eligible for a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The colorful mural that is so striking was designed and painted by local art students of the Thomas Edison High School with Tim Schlamp (Muralist), Gabrielle Buss (Art Teacher), and Kawan Olson (Student Teacher) in 2008, and very pretty it is too. For years attempts have been made to restore the theater and redevelop it, but most seem never to have gotten far (except for the lovely mural!). I'm not sure what the current status is, but I believe attempts continue to have it restored.
