The Thieves Road at Cauldstane Slap
Robbers and Reivers
For almost two hundred years small black cattle were driven through this pass on their way from Highland grazings to English markets. Robbers and cattle reivers lurked in the heather in those days, giving the route its sinister nickname
- the Thieves Road.
This old track was used as a drove road for moving cattle from the trysts at Falkirk and Stenhousemuir via West Linton to Peebles. Cattle were last driven over the Slap at the end of the nineteenth century. Victorian walkers later used the route to travel between West Linton and Kirknewton railway Stations.
