Ich bin ein Berliner
Ich bin ein Berliner "I am a Berliner" - is a quotation from a June 26, 1963 speech by U.S. President John F. Kennedy in West Berlin. He was underlining the support of the United States for West Germany 22 months after East Germany erected the Berlin Wall.
My Berliner is a doughnut made of sweet yeast dough with a jam filling and powdered sugar on top. The filling is injected with a large syringe after the pastry is fried.
I took a bite out of it so you can see the filling!
They are called by other names, too.
In my home state, the Palatinate, they are called Fastnachtsküchelchen (literally: "little carnival cakes").
Berliner go perfect with yesterdays potato soup! This meal is traditionally served on Carnival Monday or Tuesday as the last sweet treat before Ash Wednesday! No year without it!
Since its still more than a month till Carnival and there was plenty of soup left (because Amalarian and Tookie couldn't make it to my place in time) we had some Berliner and soup a little early this year. More to come on Carnival Tuesday!
