(Yet) Another Brick in The Wall
Following on from the blip last week of the modern wall that I walk past on my way to work, I thought I would blip the other wall I walk past.
This is part of the old Town Wall, which was built in the 13th and 14th centuries and helped protect the town from attack and occupation during times of conflict. It was about 2 miles long, at least 2 metres thick, up to 7.6 metres high and had six main gates.
Sadly, by the mid-18th century the wall had become obsolete and as the town was redeveloped, large sections were demolished leaving only parts standing, one of which is shown here. You can see indentations carved in the stone which would have carried cross members to hold up a walkway half way up the wall.
