When....

....the A1 to Haddington was being built
I travelled each day to work and home again
on the old parallel road and saw it all happen.

And saw this underpass to Sandy's Mill being made.

This concrete underpass, which at night fills me
with mystery and loss and a longing
for what I will never now find again
is as close as I shall ever get
to some kind of meditation
on being born, on dying....
