A camel - as seen through the eye of a Scotsman
Back in the 1870s John Gauld was a clockmaker in the fishing port of Fraserburgh in North East Scotland, some miles to the north of Newburgh on Ythan. He, or his workers, painted this friendly camel and Arab lady on the face of a grandfather clock. I guess that he had never seen a camel in the flesh given the rarity of camels in this part of the world, despite the fact that we have a great deal of sand!
