Another Awesome Sunset
Awesome....one of those overused words, but in the mountains it is quite appropriate.
Wednesday, seasonaire's (people, mostly gap year kids, who work in the resort) day off, and therefore the slopes contain a higher proportion of insouciant youths than usual. At the Fontaine Froide lift, one such slovenly young urchin, obviously trying to impress the young ladies whom he hoped to snog later on, and not realising that I understood English, remarked unfavorably on my orange ski suit, which he mistook for a mandarin jumpsuit (what's wrong with mandarin or jumpsuits?). He had a silly silver ring pierced into his bottom lip, so I reached over and whipped it out with an adroit flick of the wrist. That shut him up pretty well, and who will want to be kissing his mangled up lips now?
The high pressure system that is over the Atlantic, west of Ireland, remains stubbornly entrenched, like some African dictator, and so no weather fronts are able to make their way over the Alps. Hence the seemingly endless clear skies and complete lack of snow. One website forecast us to receive 1cm today, but I think it mistook that figure for the entire precipitation to fall in the last three weeks.
