This Is Not A Dream

Lia in Recovery

For a while now, Lia has had a swollen toe which she occasionally limped on. The swelling would sometimes go down and she seemed fine. In December I took her to the vet to get x-rayed. The vet said she had previously fractured the toe and that it didn't really heal. On the x-ray the bone looked curvy, not straight. He pretty much said there's nothing they can do. I was upset that this vet had no advice or options for Lia, especially since x-rays are expensive. We will not be returning to that vet.

We took Lia to a friend's vet and heard what we wanted to hear. There was nothing to do to fix the toe, but to stop Lia from being in pain, the vet suggested removing the toe. It's one of her middle toes on her back foot, so it would not really affect her walking. It turned out to be some kind of bone infection, possibly from stepping on something that penetrated her toe. These are things you have to be willing to deal with when you adopt dogs from the shelter.

Today Lia had the surgery. Evie was without her sister all day, and when Lia got home, Evie was worried about her. She kept whining, probably wondering why Lia wouldn't get up and play with her.

Lia goes in to the vet on Tuesday for a check up.
