Boer War Memorial in Castle of Good Hope

This Memorial is in Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, South Africa. It is to the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles. Formed in 1865 as the Cape Royal Rifles, they served in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, protecting railways in the Cape and participating in the campaign against Cape Rebel forces. Their commanding officer was killed in action during a Boer attack in 1900.

The Castle itself is a remarkable construction by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), built to dominate their re-victualling station at Cape Town in 1652. It is probably the best preserved example of a VOC fort.
