Stage Door

I've always been intrigued by this bizarre doorway that sits on its own on the pavement, especially as it is decorated with a sign for the Stage Door. It is the exit of a mysterious covered walkway that heads skywards to a fire escape on the side of the Kings Theatre.

I like theatres and was something of an amateur thesp as a kid. Backstage areas are always so tawdry and scruffy, and yet when the audience is seated and the lights go down the building is somehow transformed. When I used to go through a stage door I would always feel a surge of excitement, knowing I was part of that theatrical magic. I'm reminded of that feeling whenever I walk past this weird corrugated iron stairway to the stars.
