Worthing Pier (again)

I really did brave the elements for today's blip! After a truly horrendous rainy start to the day, it stopped raining long enough for me to run an errand in Worthing, and take the camera just in case. No rain by then, but plenty of wind and rough sea! So here we are with a viewpoint facing towards the end of the pier, and a little bit of history to accompany it:

The pier is a Grade II listed building, and was originally opened in 1862. In 1913, the pier was badly damaged by a storm, and was completely cut off from the land, with only the end section remaining. It was rebuilt, and reopened in 1914.

However, in September 1933 it was all but destroyed by fire, and was consequently remodelled and opened again in 1935. It is this that remains today.

During World War Two, a large hole was deliberately blown into the pier in order to prevent it being used as a possible landing stage in the event of German invasion.

These days, there is a theatre and cafe at the top end of the pier, and a nightclub at the bottom end. The pier is also the home of the annual International Birdman competition (yes, you did read that correctly; people really do wear home-made 'wings' and attempt to fly!)
