Ferreting

J.B our very good friend -indeed the one who helped me out the other day- has slipped on the mud whilst walking his dog up the hills around out village.
He limped about for two days and yesterday morning I enlisted the help of another friend to take him to A&E. Two hours later he returned potted to the knee, he has cracked a small bone in his ankle so now he's out of action for six weeks.
Help is on the way and he will be fine, well he'll be looked after, fed, watered and the dog will be looked after too.
Himself and I went over this morning to make sure he was ok, get a load of wood cut and brought in, light fire etc, etc.
While we were there J.B. noticed a group of kids from the village walking across the field opposite his house, it was absolutely pouring down, I mean real big heavy rain so he was curious as to what they were getting upto.
I knew what was going on.
We had been talking to these kids in the pub yesterday afternoon -two of them being the landlords kids- and they were discussing the possibiltiy of going ferreting and where they may be able to go.

I reckon if you look closely you'll see the white bag being carried by the one on the left looks a little bit lumpy....2 ferrets, not the normal way of transport but it worked.
We went down to the pub later this afternoon, not long after we'd got there the kids all arrived back having lost the ferrets. They'd put both of them down one hole, they had probably killed and eaten a rabbit and gone to sleep, as is the way with ferrets.
The best photo of the day would have been of two of the lads walking back up the village, one with a spade and the other with a paunched rabbit to dangle by the hole to try to lure them back out.
Would have..... I'd left my camera at home!
When they all returned -complete with ferrets- they were absolutely blathered with mud, the youngest and smallest by far was the worst.
Why?
They had had him laid down half into the rabbit warren calling the absent hunters out.
They had all had a great time, they caught three rabbits which they sold to the pub and last we saw they were all sat round a table eating homemade burgers and chatting about the fun they had just had.

So many kids will have been made to stay in because it was raining today.
So many kids can't go out and enjoy the space around them.

These guys are so lucky to have the freedom of village life.
