The valleys where we walked the dogs today were covered by big yellow patches of common gorse. The woods that have been here before were destroyed by a big fire in July 1999 - 2.238 hectares of woodland lost within a few days. It is impressive how fast nature catches up with such catastrophes. The seeds of common gorse are even adapted to germinate after scorching by fire and the ashes act as a natural fertilizer enhancing their growth.
