Bedlam Steps

Rainy days bring stone to life, and in any Yorkshire village there will be plenty of stone to admire.

These steps in Baildon lead up from Browgate to the Moravian Church. The name Bedlam Steps apparently derives from the loud noise of clogs on stone made by the ninety inhabitants of three cottages at the top of the steps. The first and last flights of steps (not on this picture) show the most wear; depressions of a good couple of inches below the step level.
