Brick Devon

This brick was manufactured in the local Peters Marland quarry in 1880, the clay was originally used for pottery, but the opening up of a railway to the works in 1880 enabled bricks to be made and transported from there - which is now the Tarka Trail, it was also a line for local people too.

it is the local brick, some houses are built with it throughout, others have only used it for a decoration around windows. My house was never built as a house, it was built as a Smithy yet the brick was used, this is the study window, in fact most of the windows are surrounded in this brick.

This picture of a brick was originally on the outside wall, but then the previous owners who converted the Smithy building into a home, incorporated the bricks inside as a feature, normally you wouldn't see the inscription, but these bricks were placed the wrong side round - two underneath are the same but upside down!

It's very hard to come across bricks in this colour now, so any that anyone has in this area or have been 'found', they're best to be cherished!
