Silly Wrea, Britain's last horse powered farm
I went out with Haltwhistle walkers today. 23 of us set off from Carts Bog pub on a 9 mile circular walk. This will be a walk in our Spring Festival, when we hope to be walking on a warm sunny day with long views. It was grey and windy today, but we had a great walk.
One point of special interest was Silly Wrea farm. This is the last farm to use Clydesdales to work the land. You can see more about them in a film called The Last Horseman which chronicles a year in the life of the farm.
Today we were very lucky because the farmer had one of the horses ready to take out into the field. This farmer has married into the farm. We also met his son, a delightful young man, who is set to continue the tradition. They work very hard indeed and for them it is a way of life of which they are very proud.
I tried this image in sepia because I thought it would suit the nostalgia of the image, but opted for B & W in the end - it looked better.
